Potty Training Regression: Why It Happens and How to Handle It

Few parenting moments feel as deflating as watching a fully potty-trained child suddenly start having accidents again — especially when you've already returned the diapers. Potty training regression is extremely common and almost always temporary.

Why Regression Happens: Regression is almost always a signal of stress, transition, or a developmental change — not a step backward in potty training itself. Common triggers include: A new sibling. Starting preschool or changing childcare. Moving to a new home. A significant family change. Illness. A developmental leap — children who are mastering new cognitive or physical skills sometimes temporarily "regress" in areas where they were previously competent.

What to Do: Do not punish accidents — this increases anxiety, which worsens accidents. Stay matter-of-fact: "You had an accident. Let's clean up and get you changed." Temporarily increase bathroom reminders — every 1.5–2 hours. Review the basics — is there a physical reason (UTI, constipation)? If accidents come with pain or unusual frequency, see your pediatrician. Give extra connection and support — regression often signals a need for more reassurance.

When to Seek Help: If regression persists for more than 2 months without improvement. If the child has never fully been trained and regression occurs before full training was established. If accidents are accompanied by pain, blood in urine, constipation, or significant behavioral changes.

Reassurance: Potty regression almost always resolves within a few weeks of addressing the underlying stressor and responding with calm, matter-of-fact support rather than pressure or punishment. You are not back to square one.
