Tummy Time Tricks When Your Baby Absolutely Hates It

If your baby turns tummy time into a protest rally every single time, you are far from alone. Tummy time is uncomfortable for many newborns at first -- but it's also genuinely important, so here's how to make it work for both of you.

Why Tummy Time Matters: Tummy time builds the muscles babies need to hold their heads up, roll over, sit, and eventually crawl and stand. It also helps prevent flat spots on the back of the head (positional plagiocephaly), which can develop when babies spend too much time on their backs.

When to Start: You can start tummy time from day one, right on your chest. Short sessions (1-2 minutes) several times a day is more effective than one long miserable session.

Tricks That Actually Help: Tummy time on your chest -- baby on your bare chest is often tolerated much better than face-down on a mat. Try right after a diaper change when they're alert, not tired. Use a rolled towel or nursing pillow under their chest for support. Get down at eye level and make faces, sing, or talk. Keep it short (1-2 minutes) and do it often (4-5 times a day).

Signs It's Going Well: Baby lifts their head, even just briefly. Baby pushes up on forearms. Baby seems less miserable over time (this usually takes a few weeks of consistent practice).

Quick Takeaways: Start from birth, on your chest. Short and frequent beats long and miserable. A rolled towel under their chest makes it easier. Face time and singing make it more fun. It gets better -- usually within a few weeks of consistent practice.
